Basic Science Interdisciplinary Research Projects

What is Basic Science Interdisciplinary Research Projects ?

Basic science interdisciplinary research projects are spanning diverse areas of scientific endeavor with the objective of forging new research fields that will nurture the seeds for future practical applications. These projects must be of approximately five years duration; and involve cooperation among several laboratories representing various fields. It is also desired that topics will be selected that will evolve into a new Advanced Science Insutitute research department which will become the primary center within Japan in the field.

Purpose

  • Projects involving original cutting-edge research in RIKEN's core areas of science: physics, chemistry, engineering, bio-science, medical science and other areas
  • Interdisciplinary projects among several laboratories representing various fields
  • Projects that create new seeds or next-generation fields of research
  • Ideas that will evolve into innovative fields
  • Projects may expand to become an ASI department consisting of several groups and teams

Description

  • We support unique research projects only possible at RIKEN that cannot be funded using external grants
  • Development of new fields through interdisciplinary collaboration

Ongoing Project

Molecular Ensemble Research

This interdisciplinary research project is aiming to understand exquisite behaviors of the biological systems and molecular-based materials (conductors, magnets, ...etc.) in terms of the non-covalent interactions and their changes at atomic and molecular levels.
